Waste management of properties

In addition to the Waste Act, waste management is regulated by waste management regulations. Within the operating area of Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy, all housing properties including holiday homes must be included in organized waste management in some way.

The user of the property (owner or tenant) must sign a contract with Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy on the organization of waste management, and must inform the company of any changes such as changes in company ownership.

In practice, there are three options for organizing waste management of the property:

1. Individually owned waste bins
2. A shared waste bin (e.g. between neighbours)Waste
3. A local waste collection point (only in sparsely populated areas)

In densely populated areas, individually owned and shared waste bins are most common while in sparsely populated areas, a local waste collection point is sometimes the only option. Regardless of the place of residence and family size, all housing properties including holiday houses must separate biowaste from other waste.

Individually owned waste bins

The owner of the property must acquire appropriate waste bins for the property. The waste bins must be equipped with wheels and must be suitable for mechanical emptying. The suitable waste bins can be purchased for example from Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy and DIY stores. In detached houses and holiday houses, only dry and biowaste bins are required. Biowaste can also be composted using an appropriate composter. The emptying interval of waste bins are specified in waste management regulations. For dry waste bins, the emptying interval can be 1, 2, 4, or 8 weeks. The biowaste bin must be emptied at twoweek intervals in summer, and at fourweek intervals in winter.

Shared waste bins

Neighbours or other nearby properties can have shared waste bins. This entails that the parties have signed a contract on the sharing of the waste bins and delivered a copy of the said contract to Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy. Normally, only one invoice is sent to the manager of the shared waste bins for emptying of the bins. The manager then divides the invoice between the participants based on their mutual contract.

The fees charged for individually owned and shared waste bins are based on the type of waste processed and the emptying interval. The fees are reviewed annually, and must be approved by the waste management authorities.

Local waste collection point

If property-specific waste collection cannot for some reason be organized, for example in cases where the property is located far from the regular route of the waste collection truck, a local waste collection point will be designated to the property. Local waste collection points are meant for regular domestic dry waste and can only be used by properties that have paid the annual fee. No construction waste, furniture, or other large-sized waste, hazardous waste, electric or electronic waste, or biowaste must be left at the local waste collection point or in its bins.
